About Sonja

BIO

I grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and studied painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Tufts, but completed my Fine Arts degree at Washington University in St. Louis. My paintings have been exhibited in Dallas, Santa Fe, and San Diego. I have been teaching Art classes to Pre-K to 12th grade students for more than 15 years (mostly in private and charter schools).  I have recently earned my California Single-Subject Teaching Credential in Visual Art, with a Specialization in Educational Technology.

I teach using a Studio-Art History approach: encouraging children to learn the secrets of master painters and artists from around the world, and then “turn on your right brain, get creative and make it your own.”  I also enjoy working with schools and non-profits to help create child-centered art projects for fundraisers and galas.

ART CLASS OVERVIEW

“In my art classrooms,  helping the students understand and appreciate themselves as unique individuals who accept complete responsibility for their thoughts, feelings, and actions is just as important as the subject matter. I believe that my role is to help them discover and define their own essence by introducing them to all sorts of creative opportunities and creating an environment in which they can freely choose their own way— education of the whole person, not just the mind— AND also, (of course) to help them create amazing art along the way!”

SKILLS

I am a working artist with several current exhibitions and shows. I have extensive experience organizing successful fundraisers for private and public schools. I enjoy connecting and working with both adults and children. My skill set includes: fundraising, event organization, organizing and training volunteers, hands-on art instruction and art history, leadership, curriculum design, blogging, web page design, power-point, teaching videos, online art lessons, working with schools to create student collaborative art projects for fundraising auctions, teaching art through a mobile setting, organizing and curating gallery shows for student and adults, working artist in a variety of media.
