Curie Elementary School 2018 Art and Music Festival Classroom Art Auction Projects

Curie Elementary School students created amazing collaborative art for sale to benefit the school’s visual art and music programs. This year’s offerings were absolutely exquisite and second to NONE!

1st Grade classes created Jackson Pollock inspired Action Paintings! Students also enjoyed naming their group efforts during the “en- TITLE-ment” process. Students were asked to offer word suggestions in 4 categories: Color, Action, Animal, Feeling. The class then voted on the words from each category, thus the thought provoking TITLE of each painting…

2nd Graders created Henri Matisse inspired “Paint with Scissors” collages… Students worked in pairs creatively “role playing”, in turns, Henri Matisse and then his assistant– thus each child would participate as both Artist/Assistant. The Artist Henri Matisse was wheelchair bound/ bed bound in his later life for a period of time. This lesson/project actively demonstrates to students the importance of communication and instruction to express intentions/design, but it also offers a small glimpse of what it means to be wheelchair bound and reliant on others… Clear communication and intent required on the “Matisse” side, but following direction and participation without question on the assistant’s side… It always makes for an exciting and interesting interactive lesson as well as an unbelievably beautiful collaborative piece! SDFAS 7th grade students worked in teams to recreate Henri Matisse’s, La Musique, in fabric. The image of the original painting was projected onto paper— then traced and segmented, to form a working pattern from which the students could work. Together, but in small groups, they cut, fused and assembled each section. On the reverse side, their names have been embroidered on a Matisse inspired leaf. (dry clean only). Fabric 45” x 54” Textile art

5th Grade – Painting Georges Lemmen’s, Plage a Heist. This re-interpreted masterpiece of Belgium Post- Impressionist artist Georges Lemmen, was painted in Pointillism -(a style of painting, in which small and distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image). The young artists were given individual sections of the painting to recreate, they were encouraged to… “‘Paint what You See’, not what you think!” When all segments were completed, the 5th graders worked together to unite the sections and allow the painting to flow into a single composition. Students were very amazed and proud by what their collaborative effort produced! This remarkable painting truly embodies the spirit of community art. Tempera on Paper on Wood 48” x 36”

Middle School Art Elective – Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ Mme. Moitessier. SDFAS offers Art Elective to Middle School Students on a Trimester basis. Students from all 3 trimesters contributed to this stunning painting inspired by famous French Neoclassical artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Ingres for short!)- most renowned for his portraits. Mme. Moitessier ,painted in 1856 , can be viewed at the National Gallery, London— or a more lively updated version of this “Junoesque beauty” in your own home! 36” x 36” Tempera on Paper on Wood

6th Grade – FISH! Totem Pole Embellish and bedeck your garden or patio with this whimsical planter. Each 6th Grade student created their own “spirit” fish using colored glass. Then the rainbow school of fish was adhered to a scrap length PVC pipe. This gorgeous, eco-friendly, “Recycle Art” sculpture, would look absolutely Swimmingly Splendid anywhere! 12” x 68” Mosaic Glass Tile + a plant— approx. 60lbs

3rd Grade – Set of 2 paintings “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish! “ Dr. Seuss meets artist Robert Delaunay in this Orphism (cubism with color!) styled painting. Both 3rd grade classes enjoyed working with acrylic paint to create these wonderful lyrical abstractions of fish. 3rd grade offers two different image orientations to fit your wall space, both paintings are enchanting homages to young artists and fish! 1st Grade – Mirror SDFAS first grade students chose either a sand dollar, sea scallop shell or large snail shell to observe and draw; utilizing the perviously studied art concepts of line, form, shape and color. The young artists then creatively colored the shells to their own taste – the result of which, is this fanciful and colorful collection of the best sea shells ever! You will forget to look in the mirror whenever you pass this wonderful compilation of children’s creative spirit! 24” x 48” Mixed Media oil pastel on wood and mirror.

Kindergarten Art: Science Meets Art Wall Hanging

Kindergarten students each brought in 2 objects, one living and another non-living, to be examined and photographed with a digital microscope. They discovered that beauty ‘is more than skin deep’- it even goes beyond the microscopic! Images were then printed and organized into a Mathematical/ Modish arrangement to produce this stunning, ultra hip, montage. Yours- if the price is right! Paper mounted on wood panel (24”x 36”)

First Grade Art: Black & White Line Design Mirror

IMG_0206 - Version 2 — 1st Grade – Black and White Line Design – Mirror: Zigzag, curved, wavy, spiraled- OTA 1st Graders explored the many variations of “line” with this stunning “Black and white” mirror. Warning: you may become so entranced by the breathtaking geometry that you might forget to look into the mirror! Mixed media.

Second Grade Art: Botanical Impression Clay Tile Console Table

2nd Grade – Botanical Impression Clay Tile – Console Table: OTA second graders relished the opportunity to work with clay. Local Ceramic Artist Norm Lurie shared his knowledge, talents and skills when assisting the students with their clay creations. Second graders selected and arranged their botanical specimens into clay to create the tiles that made this elegant and sophisticated Piece. Wood and ceramic tile.

Third Grade Art: S3G Mosaic Butterfly Birdbath Spectacular

Beautiful butterflies adorn this charming birdbath- a must have for any blue ribbon worthy garden! 3rd graders worked in groups, designing in colored glass, from images of real butterflies, to create this breathtaking mosaic. Songbirds will come in droves to bath in this amazing oeuvre of community art. Mixed media

Fourth Grade Art: Mandala Inspired Fused Glass Serving Platter & 8 Appetizer Plates

Hindu and Buddhist symbolism featured in Mandalas were the inspiration for OTA’s 4th Grade. Students worked together in small groups, designing Mandalas. They selected, cut, and embellished clear glass disks, which were then fired and fused to produce this stunning assortment of 8 plates and platter. Contem-plate the Universe whenever you dine!

Fifth Grade Art: Henri Rousseu’s Tiger in a Tropical Storm– OTA Style!

Core Knowledge™ 5th Grade curriculum includes the study of Henri Rousseau’s “Surprise” or “Tiger in a Tropical Storm”. OTA 5th graders were able to re-create this masterpiece in their own medium of glasstile. This magnificent mosaic table will add tropical elegance to any space.

Sixth Grade Art: San Diego Skyline Pen & Ink Landscape (Triptych)

OTA 6th graders worked in pen and ink to create three whimsical “doodle art” paintings of the San Diego skyline. These vibrant images depict the City in Motion using hundreds of small drawings combined to produce a single unified portrait of land and sea. Beautifully displayed in 3 frames this creative work will make a big splash on whatever wall they adorn.

Seventh Grade Art: Marc Chagall’s I and the Village Fused Glass Panel- OTA Style!

Working with stained glass, OTA’s 7th Grade class adapted Marc Chagall’s I and the Village to create this stunning fused glass window. Each student cut glass to shape- embellished and painted- to recreate this surreal masterwork. The result of their efforts is this symbolic and mind-bending, collaborative piece.

Eighth Grade Art: Art Meets Science– OTA Project Tree

As the 8th grade class prepares for High School they wanted to leave a monument to mark their years at OTA. How better to commemorate and embody the spirit of Old Town Academy then a monumental sculpture? Matter-Energy-Life on Earth are all represented on this mosaic, metal and fused glass sculpture. This Amazing work would make any lawn, patio, school courtyard (hint hint) resplendent!

Kindergarden 2013 — The work of local artist, Leslie Perlis, was the inspiration for OTA’s Kindergarten art auction project. The students enjoyed designing their own individual fused glass tiles while learning the unique properties of glass. This whimsical piece will add a spark of fun to your home! Measuring 31.5”x 21”x 14″

Matisse & Picasso Tryptych Screen-2nd Grade Art Learning to work together and communicate was the theme for this amazing project. After reading, When Pigasso met Mootise by Niana Laden, OTA’s 2nd Graders used the Matisse "paint with scissors" collage technique for one side of the screen and they created Picasso styled faces for the other. This beautiful collaborative piece will enliven your home or office! Measuring 4’x6’ — Learning to work together and communicate was the theme for this amazing project. After reading, When Pigasso met Mootise by Niana Laden, OTA’s 2nd grade divided into pairs and began creating the Matisse “paint with scissors” side, each pair taking turns playing the wheel chair bound Matisse and his assistant- one directing the other following his/her directions! Then they each created a Picasso styled face and discovered how difficult it can be to change one’s perception and see from another point of view. This beautiful collaborative piece will enliven your home or office! (4’x6’)

The Spectacular 3rd grade (S3G) have folded 1,030 Butterflies to get their wish, that OTA students will continue to learn,create, and share their knowledge and their talents with their families and friends. As part of the Core KnowledgeTM curriculum, the students studied the Mona Lisa in detail and were then able to re-create this masterpiece in their own medium of glasstile. OTA 7th Grade 2013 — Working with stained glass, OTA’s 7th Grade class adapted Piet Mondrian’s non- representational style (white ground, with a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the three primary colors) to create this stunning window. Each student designed and constructed their own Mondrian inspired pane. Their efforts were combined into this light and mind-bending collaborative piece entitled Composition No.7. Measures 35″x29″

John Keats’ famous poem and their study of ancient Greek culture and art inspired OTA’s “Team 6” to create their own unique montage of Grecian Urns. “What leaf-fringed legend haunts about thy shape…” This amazing piece, steeped in antiquity, will evoke heroic poetry in any room! (4” x 4”)

Children Paint! Fish Book and Shower Curtain for School Fundraiser

1st Grade Students painted fish on paper, using reference photos and water-color paint. They then composed a story as a class, based on the individual paintings. The paintings were scanned then printed on thermal transfer paper, and used to embellish a shower curtain. The shower was a “one-of-a-kind” auction item for school fundraiser, but the books continued to be sold after event. The concept is that the same project could continue to bring in revenue long after the event.
